Botanical Gardens

Jerusalem, for all its charm and its occasional architectural splendor, is not a particularly green city. While the wealthier neighborhoods possess a certain arboreal splendor, downtown and the Old City are mostly bereft of plant life, and the only grass in sight is inside the city parks.

But the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has graciously provided Jerusalem residents with an opportunity to appreciate the abundant flora of the Middle East and the world at large by establishing the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens. The gardens sprawl across several acres near the university's Givat Ram campus close to central Jerusalem, gathering an impressive collection of plants from the four corners of the world.

The gardens, built into a terraced hill, are split into botanical regions, including Middle Eastern plants, North American plants, African plants, European plants, tropical plants and much more. The bonsai collection is particularly impressive. Also available for visitors is the Seven Species, the garden's own quality kosher dairy restaurant.
