Tashlich, a symbolic casting-off of the previous year's sins during Rosh Hashana, is traditionally performed by reciting a prayer near a body of water. How do Jerusalemites perform the ritual in a city with no natural water sources? The wells located around the city have been empty since 1954, but once a year, on Rosh Hashanah, they are opened and filled in Jerusalem's ancient neighborhoods for residents to come and symbolically cast away their sins. Others have sufficed with merely turning on a faucet and reciting the prayer near the sink. Beit Shmuel invites you to participate in a fascinating Rosh Hashanah Tashlich tour (in Hebrew) in Nachlaot and Zichronot, neighborhoods in which the ancient Tashlich tradition is performed by observant Jews beside all sorts of improvised water sources.
