Beit Avi Chai presents "New Bottle, Old Wine": A Journey from Mishnaic to Modern Hebrew

Tuesday, Oct. 8, 8:00 PM

At the time that it was written, the Mishnah was penned in a linguistic manner that was far more easily understood. Together with Biblical Hebrew and the then-daily spoken Aramaic, Mishnaic Hebrew offered a new and expanded vernacular, novel coinages and new verb forms and syntax. Even today, its linguistic style and approach is found in elements of modern Hebrew.

During this evening, we will examine the influence of Mishnaic Hebrew and on its link and influence on the modern Hebrew of our times.

To add flavor, Israeli songs that incorporate Mishnaic Hebrew in obvious and often unnoticeable ways will be performed.

Moderator: Journalist and linguist Ruvik Rosenthal
With: Prof. Avigdor Shinan and author Yochi Brandes
Vocals: Yoni Eilat
Piano: Shahar Borek

Admission: NIS 30, students NIS 20

This is a Hebrew-language only event.
