Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter Sunday.
For that reason it is always on a different date on the Gregorian calendar, since Easter is a moveable feast (i.e., it moves from year to year). Lent is a forty day period of self-denial and penance in preparation for Holy Week and Easter Sunday.
Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on one’s forehead as a sign of penance.
