Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is the month in which the Koran was revealed to Mohammed. Consequently the month of Ramadan is of great importance to Islam, and throughout the entire month Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from sunrise until sundown. Ramadan is regarded as a time of penitence and purification from past sins.
