Winding its way through the Old City from St. Stephen's Gate to the venerable Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Christian Quarter is the Via Dolorosa (The Sorrowful Way), a street that traces the last steps of Jesus Christ as he trudged from his conviction at the fortress Antonia to his crucifixion on Golgotha, now purportedly contained within the walls of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
The path, dating in its current form to the 14th century, is well-trod by the feet of countless pilgrims over the generations. Along the Via Dolorosa are the first nine Stations of the Cross (the last five are within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre): the flagellation of Jesus, the remnants of the Arch of Ecce Homo, Jesus' first fall, the encounter between Jesus and his mother, the encounter with Simon of Cyrene, the wiping of Jesus' face by Veronica, Jesus' second fall, the meeting with the pious woman and Jesus' third fall. The route winds through the busy Moslem Quarter market, but the stations are fairly well-marked and attentive pilgrims should have no problem tracing the route.
