The Museum of Islamic Art presents “A Story of Illustration”: Arab miniatures – a new lecture series in Hebrew. Series directors: Professor Rachel Millstein and Dr. Taufiq Da’adala.
All lectures will begin at 19:00
In the courtyards of leaders and houses of the wealthy in Muslim lands, since the 13th century, the art of narrative color illustration on the walls has blossomed richly. The illustrations accompany and add visual meaning to the compositions which were copied by artists in magnificent books which were meant to educate, entertain and spread ideas which the leadership wanted to instill in the public. This important art, aimed mainly at patrons and the aristocracy appeared first in Iraq and Mesopotamia in the 12th century and from there spread to Iran, the Ottoman Empire and the Mongolian Sultanate in India.
The lectures in the current series are dedicated to the topics of the illustrations, their under the surface content and meaning and the cultural atmosphere which shaped them.
