Tisha B’Av, the ninth of the month of Av, is the most stringent day of mourning in the Jewish calendar. On this day the destruction of both Holy Temples is mourned, as well as every atrocity that has ever been suffered by the Jewish people. Jews refrain from eating and drinking, as well as from washing, singing, and sitting on an elevated surface. On the night of Tisha B’Av, Jews gather at the synagogues to hear the Book of Eicha, a book that chronicles in grim detail the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of its people.
