Yerushalayim Shel Ma'alah's slichot tours and encounters provide an excellent opportunity to experience the people, melodies, stories, synagogues, and the customs of the Hebrew month of Elul from an insider's perspective. There are tours for both individuals and groups of any size.

Old City Tours:

The tours begin near the Tower of David, to whom the book of psalms is attributed, and continue with a visit to shelters for the poor that were built in the 19th century. After that, participants will visit the Tzemach Tzedek synagogue and get a taste of the Hassidic world and the unique joy which characterizes the month of Elul. From there, visit the house of Rabbi Isaac Luria, the 16th century Jewish mystic. The tour ends at a breathtaking rooftop viewpoint of all of Jerusalem.

Price: 70 NIS per person.

Dates: September 5, 20, 23, 24, 25, 2012.

Nachlaot/Sha'are Hesed:

On this tour you'll experience the atmosphere of the neighborhood, meet people, and encounter the customs and prayers which characterize the slichot period in Jerusalem in times gone by. Hear stories from veteran Jerusalemites who built the modern city with their own hands. Visit a Jerusalem bakery located in a 100 year old courtyard, meet the woman behind the baking, and taste the delicacies. From there, continue onto explore water wells, sundials, and ancient synagogues, and learn about community charity organizations and open libraries in the 19th and early 20th century. You are then invited to be a guest in a unique guest house where you can participate in the musical Sefardi slichot prayers late at night. The tour ends with tea and cake at the Yerushalayim Shel Ma'alah Center.

Meeting place: Gerard Bechar Center, 11 Bezalel Street.

Cost: 60 NIS.
