El Gaucho
El Gaucho
You kind of have to respect the Argentinians. Almost every country's cuisine has a few staple ingredients, but rare is the country famed for a diet revolving around the axis of red, bloody meat. Somehow the Argentinians manage, though, and much to the delight of the more carnivorously minded denizens of the Holy City, they have transported their particular brand of culinary bovine worship from the pampas to the stone streets of Jerusalem.
El Gaucho, housed in an old stone house in Nachalat Shiva between the Yoel Salomon and Rivlin pedestrian malls, serves as a gathering place for both Jerusalem's South American immigrant community and all those who crave manly slabs of beef.
The restaurant offers multiple varieties and cuts of
steak, prepared to order, with knowledgeable waiters more than willing
to offer explanations and guidance. Steaks are served with French
fries, prepared to your liking, and chimichurri, a parsley steak sauce.
There are several non-steak options, including burgers and chicken, and
even a bone or two thrown to the vegetarians – but really, unless you
want to torture them, don't bring your vegetarian friends along.
