About

In a city as old as Jerusalem, "new" is often a relative term, which is why the Old City's New Gate still carries that title despite being well over 100 years old. The gate was cut in the city's northern wall in 1898 to allow visiting Kaiser Wilhelm II, who liked to travel in high imperial horse-drawn style, easy and direct access to the Christian Quarter. Accommodations for the Kaiser's pomposity also led to the removal of the large section of city wall abutting Jaffa Gate.

Today the New Gate leads into a residential part of the Christian Quarter dotted with a few tourist-oriented restaurants and Internet cafes, but a few minutes' walk will take you to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or the souk while avoiding the throng and the insistent merchants often found just inside the Jaffa Gate.
