From July 2 to July 21, Swedish string quartet The Fleshquartet will perform composer Steve Reich's "Different Trains" in the Kishle at the Tower of David. Director Pia Forsgren’s critically acclaimed interpretation of one of the most outstanding works of twentieth-century music is produced by The Jewish Theatre in Stockholm. This is the first opportunity for the general public to enter the ancient site which was last used as an Ottoman prison.

The unique space allows only 120 people to take part in each one-of-its kind performance. The historical layers of the old Ottoman prison that surround this musical and visual journey promises an unforgettable and exciting evening. The public is invited to become part of the concert itself as it sits amongst the glass installation created by artist Ann Wåhlström (student of Dale Chihuly).

American composer and Pulitzer Prize winner, Steve Reich, is a pioneer of minimalistic music and has had a tremendous impact on contemporary music in the United States and around the world. In the 1940's, Reich's parents divorced and his father stayed in New York. His mother moved back to Los Angeles and as a result he, as a child, journeyed on many steam trains between the East and West coasts. Later he related that as a result of these trips, he began to think about the journeys of "different trains", of the horror of human freight trains, other journeys that were happening by train at the same time but somewhere else. The melodies in the work are interwoven with recorded, spoken voices as Reich manages to extract music from speech. The speech recordings generate the musical material for musical instruments. The New York Times hailed Different Trains as "a work of such astonishing originality that breakthrough seems the only possible description". The addition of the voices charged the composition with an additional layer of meaning giving it an "absolutely harrowing emotional impact". It is no surprise that in 1990, Mr. Reich received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition for Different Trains.

The Fleshquartet has been active for 25 years and has collaborated with a great variety of artists, including Robyn, Moondog and Elvis Costello. They have also composed music for film and stage, including Mats Ek's dance productions for the Cullberg Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov and the Opera in Paris.

Entrance to the show Different Trains by Steve Reich involves a walk through the moat of the citadel and up a flight of stairs. We recommend comfortable shoes and warm clothes. Very regretfully, due to the show's unique location, Different Trains is not accessible to anyone who has difficulties walking. In addition, the location is not wheelchair accessible.
