Israel may have temporarily lost its former Guinness World Record for the world's largest dish of hummus to Lebanon (an update on this coming soon to GoJerusalem.com), but Israelis are nothing if not indefatigable - and crafty. Jerusalem has had better luck lately setting flag-oriented records, but it was only a matter of time until another crack was taken at a culinary world record, and this time, the planners are making sure it's for a dish that nobody else would try to make.
That dish, of course, is Jerusalem favorite meorav yerushalmi, "Jerusalemite mixed grill" or "Jerusalem melange," an assortment of chicken variety parts fried up with onions, herbs and Middle Eastern spices before being stuffed into a pita for a filling lunch. And the record was set last weekend as part of the ongoing Hamshushalayim festivities, with chefs from multiple Jerusalem restaurants coming together in Machane Yehuda - the heart of working class Jerusalem street food - to assemble the world's largest meorav yerushalmi.
Israeli chefs created a giant "Jerusalem mix," a local speciality of grilled meats, which weighed in at 440 pounds (200 kilogrammes)-setting the world record for the largest "Jerusalem mixed grill."
....22 pounds of flour were used to make the two yard long pita bread that was the base for the mixed grill. The grilled meat weighed in at 70 lbs (32 kilograms) and the salad at 24 lbs (12 kilograms). 3 lbs (1.5kg) of spices were also used.
...."It's the most Jerusalem of dishes, a mixture of all the peoples and cultures, a mixture of peace and unity," said organizer Noam Shaked.
