About

acing the walls of the Old City in the heart of the Mishkenot Sha'ananim artists' quarter is Montefiore-Mishkenot Sha'ananim, an elegant and authentic Italian-style restaurant with breathtaking views. At Montefiore, only the freshest and highest quality ingredients are used, and they are selected by the kitchen staff with meticulous care. Appetizers include a sea fish crudo in hot lemon butter with roasted artichokes, on-site citrus wood-smoked salmon carpaccio, and hot eggplant salad with goat feta. Pasta main courses, including cannelloni with sweet potatoes and gnocchi polenta with pecorini cheese, are made on location and with uncompromising faithfulness. Additional mains include fish dishes, stone oven pizzas and risottos. A wide-ranging selection of wines is also available.

The restaurant's namesake and setting are rife with significance. Indeed, few men since the era of the Judean kings have cast as large a shadow over the development of Jerusalem as Moses Montefiore - and certainly, in the annals of what would become contemporary western Jerusalem, Montefiore is without peer. His philanthropic activities allowed for the creation of the first Jewish neighborhoods outside the Old City's walls, Yemin Moshe and Mishkenot Sha'ananim (in addition to several other later neighborhoods), which house the most visible reminder of Montefiore's contribution to modern Jerusalem: his windmill. The windmill may never have actually functioned in its intended role, but it is as much a symbol of Jerusalem as the Tower of David. The restaurant's location is not only steeped in history - it provides views of the lovely surrounding neighborhood, the Old City and the hills of Judea leading out to the Judean Desert.

Montefiore can be also hired out for private affairs of up to 100 guests, with a dedicated catering menu of appropriately elegant, creative and authentic foods on offer.
