Lag B’Omer is a day of bonfires and celebration in Israel, partly in tribute to the great Kabbalist Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. It is the 33rd day of the Omer, a cycle of days during which Jews adhere to certain prohibitions. On the 33rd day, most Jews believe that it is permissible to cease adhering the prohibitions. Throughout Israel, children build bonfires in honor of Lag B’Omer.
