Synopsis:
In an isolated room, partly underground, there are four members of one family who find shelter there from the outside world. The small family is divided to three generations. The master Hamm, his son-servant Clov, and Hamm's elderly parents Nagg and Nell. Hamm is a blind invalid in a wheelchair - he's unable to stand; Clov attends on him, but he's unable to sit. Nagg and Nell live in rubbish-bins and never step out of them.

The family's life in the isolated room exposes a system of nuturaldependencies.

Blind Hamm is dependent on his son Clov who serves him as eyes and legs .Clov has no choice but to stay on, as there's nowhere to go; and Nagg and Nell feed of dog food served to them by Clov. They have nothing left to talk about but the past. They wallow in nostalgia and try to ignore the present.

Clov keeps watch from the window and supplies Hamm with information on what's happening outside. Everything looks dead, no earth, no see, no clouds.

Clov wishes to leave the closed room but doesn't dare. Even when Hamm releases him faintheartedly and with great difficulty, Clov hesitates and can't make up his mind.

Time passes in some life-like game against time which is running out. The game is the only way to deal with fear, pain and memory.

ENDGAME is a term derived from chess, to denote the final crucial stage, when only a few pawns remain on the board and the game is reaching its end.
