Summer in Jerusalem's Courtyards: Mondays at Shuk Machane Yehuda

During the summer months, many of Jerusalem's historic parks and coutryards will be transformed into stages for the performing arts: dance, cinema, music, theatre, and more.


Balabusta: Cucumbers, musicians, dancers, watermelons, performers, peppers, poets, and fish on Mondays at Shuk Machane Yehuda. Throughout the month of August, the Shuk will be jam packed with special events and attractions.
The events will take place every Monday throughout August (August 2, 9, 16, and 23) from 17:00-23:00.


Well known Jerusalemite personalities that are scheduled to attend include Michael Zertzekel, Shir Zemel, Omri Avram, and Netanel Fastman.


The sale stands, cafes, pubs, and restaurants in the area will all extend their opening hours to stay open until 23:00 on these nights, and events and attractions include: street performers, jugglers, dancers, DJs and live musicians. Additionally, there will be street theater and puppet theater, origami workshops and a chance to participate in making a huge picture of the shuk out of origami, a chess competition, and video art. Dressed up characters from Hagigit studio will be walking around the shuk and guests will have a chance to be photographed with them and take home the photos.


The first Shuk Olympics will also be held at the Balabusta Festival this summer, in which Shuk vendors will compete against each other. Each week a competition will be held from 17:30-18:30. The schedule is as follows:

August 2: Rhyming shuk themed song writing contest

August 9: Heavy sack handling and carrying contest

August 16: Hot pepper eating contest

August 23: Fruit and vegetable weight estimation contest (no scales allowed), as well as Shuk trivia contest.


In the food domain, there will be food tours for children with Aya Schein and Shuki the puppet, with activities, riddles, and obstacle courses, every Monday from 17:30 - 18:30. Advance registration required. (Email ayaschein@gmail.com.).

In addition, Tali Friedman, a chef who has been leading tours in the shuk for four years, will open the doors of her studio in the shuk. The open space and the roof, which on regular days are used for workshops and private meals, will be opened to the public every Monday and a chef cooked Shuk style meal will be available. The meals will take place between 17:00-23:00 and cost 250 NIS per person, including wine. Advance reservations required, call 02-537-0666.
