David Ben-Shaul: Landscape, Portrait, Still Life: Three Decades

Opening: Saturday, 17.03.2012. Closing: Saturday, 12.05.2012

Curator: Ilan Wizgan

It has been fifteen years since David Ben-Shaul presented a comprehensive exhibition of his work. Held at the Bezalel Art Academy in 1997, the exhibition was mainly seen by students and teachers of the academy and not the general public. Ben-Shaul, who is celebrating his 80th birthday with this current exhibition, is one of the artists most recognized with Jerusalem in recent decades. He does not usually show his works in large spaces, so the exhibition about to open in the Jerusalem Artists' House is an exciting event.

The current exhibition displays works on paper, Ben-Shaul's favorite support and the one closest to his heart. It encompasses three decades of creation which is mature and developed yet always characterized with inquiry, learning and searching.

Chana Goldberg: The Hidden Face

Opening: Saturday, 17.03.2012. Closing: Saturday, 12.05.2012

Curator: Irena Gordon

The man sitting next to me spoke with a heavy Dutch accent.
- Where in the Netherlands are you from? - I asked.
- From Utrecht.
- My mother is from Utrecht too.
- What was her name?
- de Haas.
- Which de Haas? - he asked. - de Haas from the Judenrat?..
(Chana Goldberg, text from the catalogue)

Chana Goldberg confronts an unresolved autobiographical story through the genre of portraiture. The exhibition is constructed out of dozens of portraits, most of them monotypes and a few of them oil paintings. They all evoke the faces of seven figures that have disclosed the story of her maternal grandfather, and thus, amongst their faces, appears her own self portrait.

Abir Atallah - Neither Black nor White: 4th exhibition in the 17th Nidbah series

Opening: Saturday, 17.03.2012. Closing: Saturday, 12.05.2012

Curator: Pesi Girsch

Abir Is an Israeli-Druze woman who moves between the traditional culture from which she comes and the enabling, limitless world of artistic creation.

Abir screams in her works the shout of women asking to make their voices heard, asking for their daughters freedom from chains and oppression, and the possibility of a better future, where they will live as autonomous women. Through the work of photography, the artist enables her daughters to experience authenticity and free choice.
