The Israel Museum presents "El Greco: St. John the Evangelist, 1597-1604": a masterpiece on special loan.
October 5, 2011-January 15, 2012
Location: Aaron and Blima Shickman Old Masters Galleries
Artist: El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos)
Special loan from the Prado Museum, Madrid.
This masterpiece by the prominent painter El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), who was active in Toledo in the early 17th century, is displayed here in celebration of 25 years of diplomatic relations between Spain and Israel. Christ's beloved disciple is depicted as a handsome young man at a fateful moment in his life, holding a cup of poisoned liquid from which a dragon symbolizing evil emerges. The medium-sized canvas presents him as an ordinary, flesh-and-blood person whose faith has the power to work miracles.
Image courtesty of the Israel Museum.
Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 10:00 to 17:00; Tuesday 16:00 to 21:00; Friday 10:00 to 14:00
