Over the past year, the Israel Museum has undergone a revivial and generated a renewed level of interest following its major redesign. The musuem's newest exhibit, titled New on Paper, displays works of famed Dutch painter Rembrandt and controversial Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch, as well as from many Israeli artists in the Prints and Drawings collection.

Nitsch himself noted that the plan for an underground labyrinth is far from feasible. However, in the context of the unexecuted schemes of artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, he added that such plans could reveal a sensuousness that is detached from the reality of implementation. The etchings are part of a significant gift of prints to the museum by the Fred Jahn Gallery of Munich, which also includes works by such artists as Franz Hitzler, Barry Le Va, and Rudi Troger,

New on Paper, presenting over seventy works acquired over the past ten years, highlights the continuing enrichment of an already extensive collection of approximately 80,000 prints, drawings, and books. Alongside works by Rembrandt, Paul Klee, Giorgio de Chirico, and the Fluxus group, a comprehensive selection of works by major Israeli artists, such as Avraham Eilat, Orit Hofshi, and Guy Goldstein, will be displayed as well. The range of works demonstrates a wide spectrum of ideas and techniques.

The exhibition also includes an important selection of maps and plans of the Holy Land, including a unique 19th century aquatint and a 360-degree panoramic view of Jerusalem as seen from the roof of the Church of the Ascension on the Mount of Olives.

On display through November 22, New on Paper is curated by Ronit Sorek, Nirit Sharon-Debel, and Eva Sznajderman from the Department of Prints and Drawings.
