Yom Yerushalayim, or Jerusalem Day, commemorates the Six Day War of 1967, during which Israel retook the parts of Jerusalem that had been occupied by Jordanian forces. It was also the first time Jews gained control of the Western Wall and Temple Mount—the holiest sites in Judaism—in thousands of years. Yom Yerushalayim is not only a day of celebration, however: it is also a solemn memorial day to the soldiers who fell in the Six Day War.
