This week in Jerusalem the Israel Festival hits its stride with a ton of shows all around town. But that doesn’t mean the city’s many and varied venues plan on shutting down in deference. From free shows in Mamilla to the tenth alternative arts Musrara Mix festival to the usual awesome smattering of plays, music gigs and sundry, Jerusalem has no shortage of things to offer this week.
- Celebrate Thursday and help somebody stay on good terms with their landlord at one of Dag Maluach’s rent shindigs, a house party which provides a good time for everybody, and rent money for the host. Check Facebook for the late-breaking exact location.
- On Friday, film, fashion and philosophy collide at an Israel Festival event at the Cinematheque tackling the seemingly incongruous fields.
- Turn Saturday night into Saturday knight with a visit to the Jerusalem Theatre for a performance of Henry Purcell’s semi-opera King Arthur with the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra and the New Vocal Ensemble.
- On Sunday, the stars will align to finally allow a trio of Israeli jazz hands, all friends who never seem to all be in the same place at the same time, to play a show at the Yellow Submarine. Together with three more jazz musicians, they will put on a special show of the Israel Allstar Sextet, which includes the decorated alt-jazz-Chabadnik Daniel Zamir (pictured).
- Like most governing bodies around the world, Israel’s Knesset is known more for rhetoric than anything else. Artist Tamar Eytan focuses her art on the idea with a new rooftop sculpture exhibit titled The Parliament: It’s All Talk. Check it out Monday.
- The calendar will turn to June on Tuesday, but the Israel Festival will still be going on, with myriad events all over Jerusalem both free and for the paying public.
- On Wednesday, get more Jewish music than you can shake an oud at with Beit Avi Chai’s Jewish Music Marathon #4.
And there’s plenty more happening. See our full events section for all the details.
