Summer begins and events rage on in Jerusalem this week

Summer has officially arrived, and the weather has been giving us all an ample reminder of that fact – although as always, the Holy City’s elevation and proximity to the desert spares us from the miserable humidity of our moisture-oppressed and frankly jealous brothers down on the coast in Tel Aviv and environs. The World Cup, of course, rages on, with plenty of bars screening all the proceedings all over the city. So no matter how warm you may feel, sweet relief is only a coffee slushy away, and with the embarrassment of cultural riches available during this week in Jerusalem, who could complain anyway?
  • If you’re a living, breathing human, no doubt at one time or another you’ve wished Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet had a bit more of a gangsta rap twist. Now you can fulfill that wish Thursday night with some alt-theater at Hama’abada.
  • Shammai Street finds riddim on Friday with a free outdoor lineup of Jerusalem reggae stars (Los Capros, pictured, will be joined by Alla Esh, Reggaestan and the Jerusalem Lions Sound System) chasing the Devil and burning down Babylon. Dread.
  • With a pre-Tisha b’Av schedule focused on introspection, Beit Avi Chai’s Saturday night concert series presents thoughtful singer-songwriter Noam Rotem.
  • A fun and educational children’s summer day camp begins Sunday at the Bible Lands Museum – perfect if you’d like, perhaps, a moment of peace in a hot summer.
  • You can’t kill the metal – and for proof, don’t miss metal night Monday at HaCassetta. Brutal!
  • The Merkaz is screening English-language movies on a big screen outdoor on Tuesday nights all summer, with popcorn and a beer included – check out the full schedule. This is, of course, a mere shadow of the cinematic offerings headed our way next week at the Jerusalem Film Festival.
  • And in further outdoor events, every Wednesday night for the rest of the summer is jazz night in the German Colony, with live groups blowing through the changes in the courtyard of the Adam School.

As always, that’s only a sampling. Should you desire more, please direct yourself to our full event listings here.
