As Jerusalem gears up for the High Holy Days, things start to get a little wacky around town. Chickens are being swung around, Haredim are out in full force taking repentance money and Sephardic Jews are getting up at ungodly hours, or extra godly depending on who you ask, to pray for atonement. Between all the hubbub though, the city is still cranking out fun things for everyone to get their hands on.
- Tonight, start off the weekend with some house, trance and techno from the mean streets of London as DJ Vadim visits Hama’abada (The Lab).
- Speaking of Haredim, why not spend your Friday checking out a new photo exhibit on that very subject at Beit Avi Chai? A picture is worth a thousand black hats.
- Saturday night the Jerusalem Theater presents a play about Haim Guri, whose book Yerid Hamizrah depicts the Israel experience from before there was an Israel to today. If there’s one high culture thing you do all week, make it this.
- Or this: On Sunday night, a mini festival will take over one house on Haneviim Street with three flats and one awesome rooftop. It’s the kickoff to Jerusalem’s big Menofim gallery exhibition.
- On Monday you can start to get into the holiday festival with the kickoff of Beit Avi Chai’s second annual Piyyut festival, celebrating the poetry of Jewish liturgy.
- Make your grandma proud Tuesday night and go see Dudu Fisher play some klezmer at the Jerusalem Theater. He’s kind of a big to-do.
- Finish off the week with some freaky-deaky spider dancing at Ha’ma’abada (The Lab). Courtesy of the Tarantula Dance Group.
