Jerusalem’s top events for the week of September 24th

One would be forgiven if upon visiting Jerusalem around now they got the impression that the city is the guilt capital of the world, what with the Jewish high Holy Days and Ramadan bringing on a bout of heavy self reflection. But they would be wrong. For even on the week with the most solemn of Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur, Jerusalem knows how to keep the boat rocking. Judge for yourself by checking out some of the best the town has to offer this week, and see to it that you get sealed in the book of good times this week.

  • The first step toward that end would be to check out the tragicomedy “Michael” at Hamaa’bada ( the Lab). Anything that takes more than four actors and a mattress to say won’t be in this play.
  • While “Michael” may have you in stitches or tears, a special high holidays performance by traditional world Jewish music hodgepodge Diwan Ha-lev will have you in the right mood to enter the Shabbat of repentance. Don’t have anything to repent? Cool. Us neither.
  • Saturday night, music legend Shlomo Gronich will hit the Yellow Submarine for a retrospective engagement.. Miss it and you’ll be the one groan-ich-ing, and not just over that pun.
  • Sunday night is Yom Kippur. If you aren’t into the whole prayer thing, hop on your bike or set up some chairs in the middle of the street – as most Israelis do on the one day that people, and not cars, take over the roads. The pedestrian and starvation diet-friendly holiday continues until the sun goes down Monday evening.
  • On Tuesday, kids TV star Yuval Hamebulbal (Confused Yuval) makes an appearance at the Jerusalem Theater that we can only assume is planned and not yet another gaffe by the scatterbrained host kids love to laugh at.
  • If your not too busy getting your four species together and shanty in tip top shape, Wednesday has plenty to offer. Two large exhibits, Black Labor and People of the World Inscribe the Bible will be saying bye bye, while Beit Avi chai will welcome a new book on the Ethics of the Fathers with an evening honoring the publication.

We’ve got all the fun stuff you’ve been praying for at our full events page. Check them, lest you wreck them.
