While the rest of the world celebrates new years with fireworks, ball droppings, champagne and kisses, Jews do it a little differently, with apples, honey, fish heads and a whole lotta prayer. But just because Dick Clark/Ryan Seacrest would never host a Rosh Hashanah special doesn’t mean Jerusalem isn’t getting into the festive holiday spirit. Here’s a list of some of the sweetest events going on around town.
- Say goodbye to the roaring 5760s with a sexy party filled with sexy people and some seeeeexy electronic music at the Yellow Submarine, which will host the very sexy Terry Poison.
- Friday night most of the city shuts down as people head home to do the whole dipping the apple in the honey thing and wish each other a happy new year. Even the Muppets are getting into the act. Have a golden delicious New Year.
- The holiday continues Saturday night into Sunday, but when the sun goes down and the lights go on in the city, head out to one of Jerusalem’s many hopping bars to celebrate Israel’s Davis Cup victory over Spain, or cry over their loss into the bottom of a bottle. Either way, Stardust or Zolly’s, which always have a game on TV, are good bets for some sports-inspired debauchery. Happy 5770!
- Dance away your dread at the upcoming Day of Reckoning (Yom Kippur) at the folk dance hootenanny in at Mamilla-Alrov Monday night. Enough practice and you’ll be ready for Simchat Torah.
- On Tuesday, Dr. Jazz has the cure for what ails you (unless it’s an actual disease, in which case we recommend medical treatment over groovy jazz music). The band will make a stop at the Yellow Submarine on Tuesday.
- Finish off the week royally, with a dose of “The American Princess” at the Kahn Theater.
But wait, there’s more. Check out our full events page, with enough going on to make the coming year as sweet (or sweeter) than the last.
