Jerusalem’s top events for the week of May 26th

Jerusalem marks 44 years of reunification this week in grand style, with concerts, marches, fireworks, parties and more. But that’s not all that’s going on around the city this week.

  • Join the party crowd tonight for a Mexican-themed pub crawl, leading through the city’s best bars to enjoy nachos,
burritos, margaritas, and of course, the finest tequila you can drink –
all priced at 20 NIS per serving. The pub crawl begins at 20:00 and
visits Cheder v’Chetzi, Jabotinsky, Tel Aviv, King Baber, Bolinat and
finally Hatzatzua, where DJ Michael Cohen lays down the beats for a dance party into the night.

How much do you know about the fathers behind Pirkei Avot (Ethics of our Fathers), the “how to be a mensch” discussions of the Mishna? If you’ve got a thirst for knowledge about Rabbi Gamliel, or a number of other sages, then Beit Avi Chai’s Avot lecture series Thursday is for you.

  • Grab a bite at Black Bar ‘N’ Burger on Friday, where all this month, celebrity guest chefs have created a special menu with personal twists.
  • Tuvya is a great place to grab a beer, but if the music and conversation hits a lull, head to the pub’s art gallery for their new On Guard exhibit from the second-year Bezalel students who haven’t quit their night jobs at the bar quite yet.
  • The Israel Festival is rolling on. On Sunday, the Jerusalem Theatre puts on the classic Chekhov play Uncle Vanya.
  • Jerusalem is getting into Jerusalem Day early with a massive march around the city Monday. Thousands are expected to participate in the annual march (pictured) – and a concert at Gan Sacher with Shlomi Shabat, Avraham Tal and Idan Amdi. Plus fireworks!
  • Tuesday night is the city’s annual Laila Lavan student day to kick off Jerusalem Day. A massive concert featureing some of Israel’s biggest musical performers – including party
groove ensemble Balkan Beat Box, guitar god Berry Sakharof, mizrahi
pop-meister Dudu Aharon, metal mayhem-ists Hayehudim and troubadour
Shalom Chanoch Shalom Chanoch – takes place this year at Gan Sacher, along with a full night of diversions.
  • If you’re not too busy recovering from the all-nighter, celebrate the 44th year of Jerusalem’s reunification Wednesday with a visit to that most Jerusalemite of institutions, the Yad Ben-Zvi institute, which will be openings its doors free of charge.
