Jerusalem marks Earth Day with a variety of events around the city.

 

Knesset head Reuven Rivlin and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat will mark Earth Day in Jerusalem with a lights out ceremony, in which they will turn off the lights lighting up the Old City walls and the Tower of David for one whole hour on April 22 from 20:10-21:10.

 

Residents of Jerusalem are urged to turn off lights and conserve electricity during this time as well. Similar events will take place in various other cities around Israel.

 

At the end of the ceremony, an exciting show "Energy in the Spirit of Tomorrow" will take place on old city walls, followed by a one time only concert by Shiri Maimon, who will perform by the old city walls accompanied by musicians. The ceremony and concert will be broadcast live on the Jerusalem Municipality's website at http://www.jerusalem.muni.il. The theme of the events is alternative energy, and turbines run by alternative energy will be displayed.

 

In addition, there will be other Earth Day events taking place throughout the day in Jerusalem:

 

16:00 Huge "green" fair opposite the Old City Walls on Alrov Mamilla Avenue: a whole slew of activities centered around the theme of environmentalism and alternative energy. Stations and activities include: SPNI station with activities and workshops for children and adults, Bloomfield Science museum displays, environmental organizations stands, Botanical Gardens sponsored activities, Biblical Zoo traveling exhibit, stations with explanatory information about environmentalism, artistic displays made from recycled materials by students, Electric Comapny displays with puppet characters "Sheka" and "Teka," arts and crafts activities, Sustainable Jerusalem explanations and activities, tours of Alrov Mamilla Avenue.

 

19:45 Award giving ceremony: Knesset head Reuven Rivlin and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat will present an award to environmental activist Dr. Zvi Tabor, who invented the solar boiler, and to the school "Homat Shmuel," for its outstanding contribution to energy conservation and environmentalism.

 

 

20:10 Lights out ceremony, followed by light show and Shiri Maimon concert


17:00-23:00 Shuhsan St. "Unplugged" Street party: light show, plastic art, Hyde Park ecology and acoustic performances. Two bars, 5 street stages, huge light show on the walls of the old Rabbanut building.
