Classic good times in futuristic Jerusalem all week long

It’s 2011! Cars are flying, robots do all of our work for us, there’s peace on Earth, and there are fun things to do every day and night in Jerusalem. Well, one out of four ain’t bad. So before you get into your imaginary hover car, check out this list of things actually happening all around town.

  • Reunion tours are all the rage. Has-beens tour around the world, working the nostalgia circuit. Say what you will – regurgitated originals are far more authentic than the tribute acts creeping up everywhere. Case in point is the Israeli 70s supergroup Tuned Tone (Tzlil Mezuhav), which is getting back together to play a show of all their hits at the Yellow Submarine on Thursday night.
  • The Cold War and Soviet hegemony in Eastern Europe aren’t usually thought of as the stuff of kids edutainment. yet somehow the Israel Museum has done it, by installing the work Growing up Behind the Iron Curtain, by Czech artist Peter Sis in its children’s wing. The exhibit runs all year long, but why wait?
  • On Saturday night, Etti Ankri hits Beit Avi Chai. Don’t expect a haphazard collection of songs from the spiritual pop singer’s career, though. There’s a reason the show is called The Connecting Thread.
  • NFL playoff action is all the rage Sunday, for fans of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Kansas City and Green Bay. Head down to Mike’s Place, HaGov or one of the of the other Jerusalemite bars showing games on big screens to check out the action.
  • The city’s law students will soon be sweating over their final exams, but before they have to, why not party it up at HaTza’atzua with an Agudat Hastudentim soiree Monday night? Majoring in home economics instead? Have no fear – there’s a party open to all students on Wednesday.
  • Gershwin and Coltrane lovers have reason to commingle Tuesday night at the Gerard Bechar Center, where a jazzed up version of Porgy and Bess is performed by Brooklyn-based vocalist Miles Griffith and local guests.
  • The Ticho House is known for offering great food and great art in a great setting. But what about great music? Yeah, they’ve got that on Wednesday night, with a program of light Balkan and Irish tunes played by a four-piece band.
