About

West Jerusalem's restaurant scene encompasses dozens of global cuisines. You can start your day with Israeli breakfast, continue to a Japanese lunch and end up with a Yemenite dinner – but once you cross into east Jerusalem, the offerings are not nearly as cosmopolitan.

Although east Jerusalem may lack the culinary diversity of its western counterpart, it's decidedly the place to go for travelers looking to sample traditional Palestinian cuisine. An east Jerusalem institution right outside the Old City's Damascus Gate on Al-Zahra Street, Philadelphia may not sound like a fitting name for a traditionally minded Middle Eastern restaurant (nor is Jerusalem exactly a "city of brotherly love"), but that's exactly what Philadelphia is.

The fare runs from homestyle Palestinian favorites like lamb on a bed of rice to garlic and lemon infused St. Peter's fish and red snapper. The restaurant has played host to a steady procession of famous visitors, and for what it's worth, Jimmy Carter claims it as his favorite restaurant in the city.
