About

Every king must weather dissent and challenges to his reign, and Melech Hafalafel V'hashwarma (The Falafel and Shwarma King), Jerusalem's venerable downtown falafel stand, is no exception. Right next door, counter-monarchist elements have established Ochel B'kef, which threatens to usurp the august office of the king by promising the people a new, proletarian outlook, inviting them to cast off the shackles of fast food imperialism and embrace fried chickpeas and meat skewers as they should be – as fun ("kef").

Of course, a dry-eyed observer might note that there's nothing particularly fun about Ochel B'kef's offerings of shwarma, falafel and all their relevant salads; in fact, if not for the added menu item of various shipudim (skewered meat), it would be impossible to distinguish the restaurant from its neighbor. The prices are the same, and every special one restaurant begins, the other will immediately duplicate. But it does tend to be open later, so if you get a 22:00 falafel craving, elbow your way through the massive crowd of Israeli yeshiva students and, well, have fun.
