Lions' Gate

Jerusalem Attractions - 5

About

One might think the gate marking the traditional beginning of the Via Dolorosa, the path walked by Jesus during the last hours of his life, would give a nod to that historical and religious significance in its nomenclature. But Jerusalem residents have always been a contrary bunch, so instead of the Dolorosa Gate, we have the Lions' Gate.

To be fair, there are lions – four small stone lions in bas-relief above the gate, which were purportedly inspired by a dream Suleiman the Magnificent had, in which failure to build the wall around Jerusalem resulted in being devoured by lions. The gate leads straight into the Muslim Quarter, and after walking down the church-lined Via Dolorosa for a few minutes, you'll walk right into the thick of souk.
