Shavuot Night at the Tower of David: Tours inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem

With the end of the Six Day War the Jews came back to their holy sites after 19 years. On Shavu’ot, the festival of pilgrimage, we will host special tours about the reunification of the city that will tell the story of divided Jerusalem and about pilgrims throughout the years.

The Evolution of a Symbol – A tour of the Tower of David and Mount Zion that tracks the persons, events and locations in Jerusalem that became  symbols and part of our identity. We will investigate the history of the Tower of David and learn how it became one of the symbols of Judaism and Zionism; we will discover who else adopted it as a symbol; we will try to understand the background of the sanctification of Mount Zion for the three religions; and investigate the story of the Western Wall ever since it was a part of a magnificent holy site during the Second Temple period and how it became the symbol of Jewish memory and identity.

Tour that first looks at the divided city of 1948-1967 and the story of the city's reconstruction after the Six Day War. The tour starts at the Tower of David, observing the two parts of the city and the city line. The Tower of David will be explored as the strategic point that it was during those years, followed by a walk along the Old City Walls with stories from the border neighborhoods of Mamilla and Yemin Moshe.

Discover the history of Jerusalem as the guided tour weaves participants in and out of the Ottoman built guard rooms of the Tower of David Museum and 3000 years of history. The stones of the citadel echo the history of the city and the monumental events that have taken place in the story of Jerusalem will be explored, cultures, rulers, builders and its place in the world as a pilgrimage city for the three largest monotheistic religions.
