Pardon, Forgiveness and Prayer
Again this year, the Tower of David Museum is organizing Selichot tours for the public. An exciting tradition which transports participants hundreds of years into the past, to a magical, mysterious Jerusalem.
The reciting of Selichot prayers is an ancient Jewish tradition. They are designed to prepare one for the High Holidays, when one’s fate is sealed in heaven. According to legend, the person who started the tradition was Moses, who went up to Mt. Sinai on the first day of the month of Elul in order to ask for forgiveness from God. Every year, Jews around the world pray during the month of Elul, the time of forgiveness.
Sephardim say Selichot prayers during the entire month, while the Ashkenazim ask for forgiveness only during the week before Rosh HaShana, for at least 4 days starting from the Saturday night before the holiday. Of course, neither Sephardim not Ashkenazim pass up a chance to poke fun at the other: Ashkenazim say that the Sephardim ask for forgiveness for an entire month because they sin much more; while Sephardim say that Ashkenazim ask for forgiveness for only a week because their tunes are so unbearable to listen to that the angels shorted the time period of their prayers.
The tours will occur in Jerusalem and the Western wall during this time, offering an exciting experience.
The tour will begin at the Tower of David. First we will ascend the Phasael Tower, the highest point in the Old City and enjoy the expansive observation point over the Old and New Jerusalem.
Afterwards, we will continue to the moat of the Citadel, built in the middle ages, and from there to the Kishle, the British Prison where evidence has been found from all periods of Jerusalem’s history. A musical workshop will be incorporated with learning and songs of some of the piyyutim poetry of the selichot prayers, under the direction of David Cohen Nehemya. From there we will continue to the alleyways of the Jewish quarter, and conclude at the Western Wall.
Along the course of the tour, we will connect to Jewish prayer, shofar blowing on Yom Kippur, the piyyut poem “Unetanneh Tokef”, additional piyyut poems, Jewish customs and different traditions in the Old City, from the distant past until today.
