A mishmash of Hebrew words that indicates loads of cultural offerings at little or no cost taking place on four weekends in Jerusalem, "Hamshushalaim" kicks off its seventh season in December 2011: December 1-3, 8-10, 15-17, and 22-24, 2011.

Tower of David Museum invites you to participate in "Eating in Jerusalem" on December 2, 9, and 16, 2011, as part of Hamshushalaim. Renowned Jerusalem chefs and culinary researchers will engage in food and cooking in Jerusalem from biblical times to the contemporary Jerusalem kitchen and combine it with a tour of the Old City market that will follow the market place throughout the history of Jerusalem to the shuk today with guides of the Tower of David Museum.

 


The encounters with chefs and reasearchers will take place at 10:00 and 13:00. The tours will be at 11:15.

10:00 Shmeel Holland: "The Jerusalem Kitchen - the kitchen of immigrants": Shmeel Holland, chef and food researcher, tells the story of the Jerusalem kitchen being a combination of a traditional kitchen and the kitchen of immigrants... the results are interesting and delicious flavors.

 


11:15 Tour "The Jerusalem Market" through the Old City alleyways. The market place is a reliable mirror of the local culture and it's colorful, vibrant and appealing. The tour offers a special encounter with the Old City markets of Jerusalem from Roman times to the colors and smells of the market today. The tour begins with the spectacular views both east and west from the tops of the towers in the Tower of David. The tour continues on mixing in stories and spicy aromas from David Street, the Old City Bazar finishing in the Roman Byzantine shopping street of Jerusalem some 2000 years ago in the Cardo.

 


13:00 Moshe Basson - From Spices and herbs to Marshmallows and the Lag Ba'omer bonfire. Moshe Basson, chef of the Eucalyptus restaurant, will spice his encounter with interesting anecdotes and stories about food from the Jerusalem from Bible days and the days of the Sages to the present. Bassoon will talk about the effects of the Jerusalem food scene on kitchens around the world.

 

 


Friday,December 9, 2011:


10:00 Shai Zeltzer "Cheese, tastes and stories": Shai Zeltzer, cheese maker, will talk about the relationship between place and the taste and look at the types of cheeses that appear in the Bible following it through to the innovation that characterizes Israeli cheeses today, including traditional Arab cheeses, Israeli cheeses and the eco system in the Judean Hills.


11:15 Tour "The Jerusalem Market" through the Old City alleyways with guides from the Tower of David

 


13:00 Tova Dickstein - Stories and Recipes from the Talmud Yerushalmi. Tova Dickstein is an expert in the food of Ancient Israel and will take us into the pots of the women of Ancient Israel as they cooked in the house and the yard. She'll tell about the types of ancient food, those who ate a simple everyday meal and menus for special occaisions. Tova will season the encounter with stories and gossip from "the yard" and add the superstitions that always helped the success of the dishes.

10:00 Ezra Kedem - Jerusalemite effects on contemporary Israeli cuisine. The story of his personal journey and development of the gourmet cuisine of Chef Ezra. This is a journey of insistence on local materials and the desire to make vegetables and spices stars of the kitchen.


11:15 Tour "make a market in Jerusalem" in the alleys of the Old City with guides Tower of David


13:00 Elinoar Rabin - Jerusalem culinary story. Elinoar Rabin, author of many cookbooks and the book "Jerusalem Culinary Story", will share the gastronomic experience in Jerusalem with us in this encounter.
