According to Jewish tradition, the focus in the month of Elul is on soul-searching, forgiveness, preparations for a new year, and repentance. Reading and study sessions on what these processes mean to individuals and society today, together with an interactive experience and familiarization with psychological and spiritual approaches and tools.

Organizer and moderator: Efrat Tannenbaum, family and couples therapist, facilitator at Alma Home for Hebrew Culture and the Adler Institute


Part 1: Soul-Searching
• Monday, August 9, 8 PM
A reading and study session about soul-searching in Jewish culture.
A conversation about collective soul-searching with Assaf Inbari, author of the documentary novel Habayta (Home), and thoughts on the hundredth birthday of the kibbutz movement.


Part 2: "Man, Why Are You Sleeping"-Forgiveness and Selihot
• Monday, August 16, 8 PM
A reading and study session about Selihot (penitential prayers)
A conversation with Arnina Kashtan, founder of the Meitarim Center (for nonviolent communication), on forgiveness from the perspective of nonviolent communication.


Part 3: Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God; and Renew a Right Spirit within Me. (Psalm 51:12)

A reading and study session about our annual opportunity to start over
Meditation as a tool for creating something new inside us, with Uta Gabay, psychotherapist and spiritual teacher


Part 4: "Bring Me Back and I Shall Return," and Also, What's the Question?
• Monday, August 30, 8 PM
A reading and study session on the meanings and types of repentance in Jewish tradition
A conversation on forgiveness, repentance, and appreciation as seen through the prism of positive psychology, with clinical psychologist and economist Prof. Oren Kaplan, one of the leading experts in positive psychology in Israel.
