A veteran of gourmet kitchens both local (Arcadia and Canela) and abroad (Italy's Michelin-starred Ristorante da Vittorio), chef Lior Heftzadi has brought his culinary expertise to bear on Jerusalem bistro Lara, updating local ingredients with an international sensibility.
A constantly changing kosher menu spotlights quality local ingredients and surprising combinations that bring elements of the chef's personality and creativity to classic dishes. First courses range from familiar Middle Eastern, like Israeli kebab, to Italian (fresh pasta, polenta and carpaccio) and Spanish (veal tongue a la plancha). The pan-Mediterranean theme carries on to main courses, including beef and bone marrow skewers, sweetbreads, lamb stew with root vegetables, fresh fish, the ubiquitous entrecote and even a vegetarian special of eggplant ravioli.
A homey Jerusalem stone aesthetic adds much to the meal, with exotic African wood tables and handpainted murals on the walls. The fully open kitchen allows diners to watch the fascinating ballet of professional food preparation. The arched stone interior boasts room for 55 diners, and an additional 25 can enjoy the lovely Ben Shetach midrachov on Lara's patio.
