Perhaps there is no illustration of the sharp divide between American youth and Israeli youth more poignant than the modest Reznik pub on the Hebrew University's Mount Scopus campus. American college bars are low-class, single-purpose affairs, intensely redolent of that unique mixture of spray cologne, sour mix and bodily effluvia. Israeli college bars, of which Reznik is a shining example, are clean, well-designed and relaxed. Throbbing top 40 hip-hop is eschewed in favor of live homegrown talent. Beer on tap replaces pre-mixed shooters named after controversial sex acts. Nobody will ever scream "WHOOOOOOO!" in your ear. All you'll see at Reznik is a crowd of dedicated university students unwinding with a chetzi after a long day of class. Grab a bar stool or a sofa, get a beer or a cocktail, order some bar food from the full menu and chat up that fine dude or lady in your Middle Eastern studies class, and see if it doesn't change your opinion on Israeli bar culture.
