Roots of Christianity: Nazareth, Capernaum, and the Jordan River
While Jerusalem is holy to Christians, the faith was born in the humble environs of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel, a verdant and pastoral landscape dominated by striking hills and the calm waters of the modest sea itself. Hailing from Nazareth, Jesus made his first disciples among the Jewish fisherman of the Galilee, basing himself in Capernaum on the sea's shore before bringing his message to Jerusalem.

This tour visits most of the sites significant to Jesus' life and ministry in the Galilee region - which is especially convenient because many of the sites are not easily accessible without a hired bus or car. Pilgrims and those interested in the historical roots of the Christian faith should look no further.
You'll depart from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv and head north to Nazareth to visit the Church of the Annunciation, the monolithic modern church built over the traditional site of Mary's discovery of the momentous nature of her impending birth. The route then descends towards the sea with stops at Cana, site of water-into-wine fame, and Capernaum (Kfar Nahum), where parts of the foundation of Jesus' synagogue can still be seen. Heading south along the shoreline, you'll then visit Tabgha for a stop at the Church of the Multiplication, which commemorates the miracle of the loaves and fishes. The tour heads through Tiberias and culminates with a visit to Yardenit, the traditional site of Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist.
Tours of holy sites require modest dress - no shorts are allowed, and women should make sure to cover shoulders and knees.
The tour entails walking outdoors - comfortable shoes and a hat are recommended.
