Vaqueiro
Vaqueiro
Israelis are not by nature a particularly gluttonous people – as with most Mediterranean peoples, their favored dishes tend to be small and well-flavored, making gorging nigh-impossible. But Israel is also a nation of immigrants, meaning the cuisines and culinary habits of other nations crop up – and thus, we have Vaqueiro, a Brazilian-style eat-'til-you-pop meat smorgasboard popular with English-speaking immigrants and tourists from countries with entrenched traditions of eating a lot.
Presided over by Stanley Lifshitz, a South African whose previous endeavor was the French/South African fusion steakhouse Stanley's, Vaqueiro is housed in a spacious stone building on Hanevi'im Street, a short walk and a world away from the bustle of downtown Jerusalem.
Dining with large parties is recommended if only to better cope with the sheer volume of food: Waiters trundle out cart after cart of meat dishes ranging from South African sausage to American-style turkey to, of course, entrecote steak. Salads and home-baked bread are also included. Vaqueiro has now also recently added a new menu of Italian fare so their selection is wider than ever, and all herbavores can now enjoy themselves as well.
