City of David Guided Tour

City of David Guided Tour

Immediately outside the Old City's Dung Gate, overlooking the Kidron Valley that separates the Temple Mount from the Mount of Olives, runs a ridge called the Ophel - which so happens to be the location of the true heart of ancient Jerusalem, the ruins of the city's original fortifications before the center of city life shifted to the area of what is now the Old City.

Long ongoing excavations on the Ophel have uncovered the remnants of buildings dating back to Jebusite and Israelite Jerusalem in the tenth century BCE, which have been dubbed the City of David - though as of yet, none of the monumental discoveries have been definitively tied to the Davidic monarchy by name.

Still, this was the seat of civil authority in ancient Israel, the center of the Bible's many tales of royal intrigue and foreign conquest. Archaeology buffs wanting to experience the "Older" City of Jerusalem and uncover traces of the city's monarchic past would do well to sign onto this guided English language tour of the City of David site - indeed, many of the City's finds, though of massive archaeological importance, require a trained eye to help explain.

On this tour, you'll be able to experience:

  • An exciting three-dimensional presentation
  • An unforgettable view of Jerusalem, the City of David and the city's borders from the site's Observation Deck
  • Area G, the royal compound of First Temple Jerusalem
  • Warren's Shaft, the hewn underground tunnels that connected the citadel to the Gihon, the city's water source
  • The recently-discovered Siloam Pool of the Second Temple Period

The group meets at the Visitors' Center at the entrance to the City of David. Please arrive 15 minutes before the official tour start time.

The City of David offers three unique tour routes:

Ascend to Zion:

Jerusalem during the Second Temple Period was an impressive and beautiful city of international importance. Many remnants of these glory days can be seen at the City of David. You are invited to join us on an incredible tour in the footsteps of the architects and builders of the city, to touch the recent archaeological discoveries, to be amazed by the remains of the Shiloach Pool and the recently discovered Herodian Road which will lead you in the footsteps of the Second Temple pilgrims from the City of David to the Temple Mount. Come learn about Jerusalem's hidden secrets.

Jerusalem Beneath the Stars:

A new evening experience which combines beauty, sound and artistic lighting in the City of David. The evening begins with a hot cup of tea enjoyed over the sounds of the harp emanating from the park. A magical nighttime panoramic view from the top of the City of David hill is followed by an impressive 3D movie about Biblical Jerusalem. Stop to hear about the incredible archaeological finds from the Biblical period and continue on to a new artistic sound and light show that is screened on the backdrop of the antiquities, which presents the story of the ancient city through movement and sound. From here, visitors continue on a short walk underground, entering the excavations in the ancient valley (Tyropoeon). A walk through the Herodian Channel ends with a grand exit at the foot of the Western Wall and the Robinson's Arch, located in the Jerusalem Archaeological Park-Davidson Center.

Tour Length: 1 ½ hours
